Spotted Rosey Starling birds in Mysore | Seasonal Birds of Karnataka | Birds of India

Last year(2021) was the 1st time, we spotted these birds near calm urban areas of Mysore hanging out near the big trees during the winter season..These are migratory birds to this place during the winter season, and they arrive in larger numbers and make so much noise and attract the attention.

These birds can be found in bird in grasslands, semi-deserts, and deserts of Central Asia and Southeast Europe.

It is a strong migrant, appears in India and tropical Asia during winters. 


Remarks

 

* It's a regular visitor to India during Winter season.


* In the Indian winter season, it often appears in large numbers than the local starlings and mynas. It's a noisy bird and catches your attention.

* It's a bird of grasslands and open agricultural land.

* Adult rosy staring will have a distinctive pink body, pale orange leg, and glossy black head, wings, and tails.


* Male birds will have long head feathers which form wispy crests during the breeding season. Whereas Females have a short crest and sharp separation between pink and black

These birds are sparrow sized birds and I spotted them  in urban areas perched on electric wirelines or trees. If you dont observe them properly at 1st sight, you will think its a sparrow itself. 

but whn you start observing little bit, 1st thing that catches your eyes is their lower porting with cream color and then covered with scaly breasts..

Remarks

 

As the name says, if you observe the bird closely, it has white with dark scale markings. Male bird has darker markings and throats compared to females

* The adult bird has a dark bill, brown upperparts, and a dark brown head. 

* They mainly eat grass seeds, fruits, and small insects.

* Their rump is white, while the vent is red. Their black tail is tipped in white.

* They feed on fruits, petals of flowers, and insects.
